Design registration protects the appearance of a product, and can also act as a deterrent to others who might want to copy and commercialise a product with a similar appearance. A registered design can also be a good alternative for protecting a product where a patent is unavailable or not warranted.
This seminar will provide an overview of the design registration system, both in Australia and overseas. It will cover key issues such as:
- the significance of the design registration system within the realm of IP protection
- information for pursuing design protection both in Australia and overseas
- the protection afforded by a design registration
- considerations for maximising the scope of protection afforded by a design registration
- issues to consider so as to not compromise the scope of protection afforded by a design registration.
About the presenter:
Davin Merritt is a patent and trade marks attorney and a Partner of Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick. He leads the designs team, with extensive experience in patent and design searching. Davin does a lot of work with manufacturing clients, from individual inventors through to large corporate entities both in Australia and internationally. He works principally on engineering matters, and his work includes the drafting of patent specifications, opinion work, and the prosecution of engineering patent applications before IP Australia and other international patent offices.
