On Tuesday 14 June, we will be hosting four seminars that will allow you to earn points towards your professional development, while networking with your peers. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, with 15 minute tea/coffee breaks between sessions. Light refreshments will also be provided at the conclusion of the final seminar.
Additionally, each presentation will be simultaneously broadcast online via Microsoft Teams – if you’re unable to attend in person, you will still be able to watch each seminar and ask questions online.

Trade Marks Across the Ditch – 11:00am
Presented by Greg Chambers
Greg Chambers will discuss some of the differences between trade marks procedures in New Zealand and Australia, including differences in evidentiary standards in oppositions. The talk will provide a CPE point for Trans-Tasman registered patent attorneys specific to IP law and practice in New Zealand
Trade Marks 201 – 12:15pm
Presented by Russell Waters
Aimed at practitioners with some trade marks experience, Russell Waters will look at more advanced elements of trade marks practice, including what qualifies as a series trade mark; certification, collective and defensive trade mark registrations; and applications under the Madrid Protocol. The talk will provide a CPE point for patent and trade marks attorneys.
A Guide to Inventorship and Entitlement to an Invention – 1:45pm
Presented by Dr Leigh Guerin and Melissa Wingard
While it may seem easy, identifying who are the inventors of an invention may not be straightforward, particularly in the modern environment when inventions are the products of increasingly large teams. This CPE seminar will discuss what to consider when identifying who should be listed as an inventor on a patent application and why it is important to establish this early. Further, mechanisms for transferring rights from the inventors will be discussed.
Tricks and traps for users of the New Zealand patent system – 3:00pm
Presented by Dr James Burnley
James Burnley will talk through impacts of recent New Zealand Patent Office decisions, general practice tips and strategies for appealing adverse examination reports. The talk will provide a CPE point for Trans-Tasman registered patent attorneys specific to IP law and practice in New Zealand.
