Patent Attorney

About the role

Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick (POF) is looking for a registered patent attorney to join our Electronics, Physics & I.T. (EPIT) team in Melbourne.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients to protect cutting-edge technologies. Under the guidance of experienced Principals with a wide range of subject matter expertise, you will have the opportunity to develop IP protection strategies tailored to our clients’ commercial objectives. Reporting to the Principals in EPIT, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications in Australia and internationally,
  • Preparing high quality written and verbal IP advice in a timely manner,
  • Managing intellectual property portfolios for local and international clients,
  • Developing and executing IP strategies tailored to client needs
  • Preparing and delivering IP related articles and presentations internally and externally,
  • Participating in networking events, seminars, and business development activities.

About you

You are a registered Australian or New Zealand patent attorney who is degree qualified (or higher) in electrical or electronics engineering, computer systems engineering, mechatronics engineering, information and communications technology (ICT), physics, quantum computing, software engineering or a related technical field.

You will also possess the following:

  • 1-3 years post-registration experience as a Patent Attorney,
  • Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the above technical fields,
  • Experience managing IP portfolios and developing IP strategies for Australian and international applicants,
  • A client-focused approach and ability to build strong professional relationships,
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities,
  • Exceptional technical knowledge,
  • An eye for detail, with excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • Advanced Computer skills and database researching skills,
  • Highly organised and responsible with experience prioritising and working to deadlines,
  • A positive attitude with a collaborative and innovative mindset.
